The Dream of Becoming a Yoga Teacher
Becoming a certified yoga teacher had always been a deep passion of mine, especially in my 30s. But as a working mum of two young kids, time and finances were tight. Between climbing the corporate ladder, training as a full-time triathlete, and being a hands-on mother, I couldn’t justify pursuing my yoga certification—yet.
I told myself, "One day."
The Cycling Accident That Changed Everything
That "one day" came unexpectedly—after a devastating cycling accident. During a high-speed peloton ride (34km/h!), my brakes failed, causing a pile-up. I was sandwiched in the crash, landing hard on my right hip, knee, and shoulder.
The injuries were severe:
• Hip misalignment
• Frozen shoulder (couldn’t lift my arm past shoulder height)
• MCL re-injury & stiff hamstrings
• Limited knee mobility (couldn’t bend beyond 90 degrees)
The Painful Recovery & Emotional Struggle
For five long weeks, I focused on healing my wounds—but the real damage went deeper. Without triathlon training, I spiraled into depression and weight gain. The extra pregnancy weight I never lost piled on, crushing my confidence.
I felt like a broken athlete, a tired mum, and a lost dreamer.
The Turning Point: How Yoga Saved Me
Yoga became my lifeline. The opportunity came, when there was a course on 50 hours of YIN Yoga guided by a sifu from Hong Kong. And it took 10hours x 5 days of gentle yet intense stretches and practicing mindfulness that brought me back to the path of healing.
Gentle stretches eased my frozen shoulder, mindful movement realigned my hip, and breathwork soothed my anxiety. Slowly, I regained strength—not just in my body, but in my spirit.
That’s when I knew: It was time to become a yoga teacher.
